History of Cointreau Orange Liqueur: A Family Legacy Born in Angers

Cointreau by Authentic Food Quest
From local fruit liqueurs to the world’s leading Triple Sec

Cointreau began in 1849 when two brothers, Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau, opened a distillery in Angers. Using the abundant fruit in the region, they made fruit liqueurs for the local market.

One generation later, Edouard Cointreau, son of Edouard-Jean, set out to create something entirely new. He experimented with a precise balance of sweet and bitter orange peels.

In 1885, he created a crystal-clear liqueur unlike anything on the market at the time and called it Triple Sec. This was the “birth” of Cointreau as we know it today.

To stand out, Edouard also designed a distinctive square bottle. It was practical, elegant, and immediately recognizable on a shelf. This was followed by bold advertising campaigns which popularized the brand across Europe and eventually around the world.

Today, Cointreau is part of Rémy Cointreau. It remains family-controlled and production has stayed in Angers.

Sights, Scents, and Global Production

Copper stills where Cointreau is distilled and crafted

Walking into the distillery, you are immediately struck by the bold orange exterior. As you step inside, the color follows you in. So does the scent. The sharp, zesty smell of dried citrus fills the air before you even reach the first stop.

The tour takes you through the copper stills where the orange peels are slowly transformed into liqueur.

You get to see up close how Cointreau is made, the distillation works, the ideal temperatures, and the precise processes that go into every single batch.

One of the moments that caught us off guard was standing before the stills and realizing that everything in front of us produces the entire global supply of Cointreau.

Every bottle, in every bar, in every country, comes from this single room in Angers. We did not expect that.

Four Natural Ingredients and The Aromatic Experience

Dried orange peels reveal the aromas behind Cointreau

What makes this French orange liqueur so distinct is its simplicity. The recipe relies on just four natural ingredients: sweet and bitter orange peels, sugar, pure water, and natural alcohol.

Our favorite stop on the tour is the aromatic experience. You pick up dried orange peels, bring them close, and breathe in their concentrated scent. Then you snap them open, and the full aroma is released all at once. It is one of those small moments that makes everything suddenly make sense.

Along the way, you discover the story of the Cointreau family and the mark this iconic brand has left on French culture and the world beyond.

By the time the tour ends, you are more than ready to put everything you have learned into practice at the cocktail masterclass.

Cointreau and the Art of the French Aperitif in Angers

In France, the apéritif is not just a drink before dinner. It is a ritual, a chance to slow down and reconnect before the meal even begins.

In Angers, we have come to see Cointreau as part of that ritual. It is consumed either as an apéritif or as an after-dinner digestif.

It can be served over ice as a simple sipper or mixed into something more festive. Either way, it fits right into that slower, more relaxed way of life referred to as “la douceur Angevine.”

But Cointreau does not stop at the glass. You will see it show up again and again on local menus.

Creative chefs use it to brighten desserts like flambéed crepes and delicate soufflés, and even in savory dishes.

On our Loire Valley immersive cooking vacation in Angers, you’ll get to taste some of these local dishes infused with Cointreau firsthand.
